Westford Littleton Crew Takes Home Gold, Silver, and Bronze

Westford Littleton Crew sent four teams to compete in last Saturday’s 1500 meter Novice Challenge Regatta on the Merrimack River in Lowell and came home with medals in three competitions.

Women’s Novice 8 (first flight) garnered gold with a time of 6:23:47, which was more than 20 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Coxed by Molly Ryan, rowers Katie Stokes, Katie Lawson, Lena Brettl, Dominique Quinn, Caroline Provost, Ashley Cotnam, Lilly Keefe and Shannon Forty beat out 15 teams in their flight, the largest race of the Regatta.

WLC’s Men’s Novice 4 (first flight) took home the silver with a time of 6:18:66, missing first place by 4.5 seconds. Rowers Cody Grimm, Ryan Chen, Peter Trainor and Zach Kettering were coxed by Katie Lawson.

WLC’s Women’s Novice 8 (second flight) earned a bronze with a time of 7:02:96. Coxed by Gayatri Susarla were rowers Morgan Beanland, Eliza Bulger, Katie Morris, Charlotte Jones, Joelle Bosia, Sarah Elliott, Tresa Casey and Rohini Sinha.

Weather for the race was not ideal. Headwinds of 23 mph kicked up white caps which made rowing difficult. “You won’t see worse conditions then these,” Coach David Cormier said, adding that the winds were “abysmal.”

Despite the adversity, Coaches Cormier and Eddie Bruce were very pleased with the resilience and effort displayed by all WLC rowers, who now look forward to their next race this coming week-end. Varsity, Junior Varsity and Novice will compete at the Lowell Invitational on the Merrimack, with races expected to kick off by 8:00 am on Saturday.

WA Senior Athletic Banquest

Senior Athletic Banquet — May 20th @ 5p.m. @WA

The Annual Senior Athlete Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 19th at 5:00 p.m. in the Westford Academy Cafeteria, and will be catered by Westford’s own Meat Again. RSVPs are required. Invitations will be mailed closer to the event to the seniors and the WA coaches.

This includes seniors that participated in crew at least one season during high school at WA.

The 12th Annual National Learn to Row Day

Westford-Littleton Community Crew welcomes the public to join us on the 12th Annual National Learn to Row Day – Saturday – June 1st, 2013 – 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Location: Forge Pond, Westford.

Competitive and recreational rowers range in age from 12 to over 90, so it is n ever too early or too late to take up the sport!

Participants will meet our coaches and get a crash course in indoor rowing (erging), along with the basics of the rowing stroke and a brief overview of the equipment used and the programs being offered through Westford Recreation.

The visit culminates in an on-the-water rowing experience in an “eight” with an experienced coxswain and rowers to guide them (weather permitting).

If you’ve ever thought about rowing now’s your chance to find out more information. Join the Westford-Littleton Community Crew coaches, board members, and current master rowers. Find out more about rowing and the programs being offered. Rowing is a non-weight bearing sport that exercises every muscle in your body.

A Master Rower is anyone over the age of 23, no experience necessary.

We are currently offering learn to row programs as well as a competitve masters program. Some of the current programs being offered this Spring/Summer Season are:

* Morning Row - this program is for any adults interested in recreational rowing and wish to increase their fitness level. Offered Monday & Wednesday from 9:30am – 11:00 am starting in April.

* Business Lunch Row - this is an opportunity for individuals of any ability with the desire to try something new and exciting while on lunch break! Offered on Fridays from 11:30am – 1:00pm starting in June.

* Masters Competitive Row - this program is offered to anyone out of college looking to compete with others in Masters Events. Prior rowing experience required.

Sessions will focus on the development of proper technique,rowing terminology, and proper boat handling. Don’t miss out on learning a new life skill while having fun in the process!
